Following the Second World War, Sentinel introduced an improved version of its successful steam shunter. While retaining the compact layout and vertical-boiler principle of its predecessors, the new design featured revised bodywork, with the water tank and cylinders enclosed within a metal casing. Access hatches were incorporated into the body to make maintenance and servicing easier, while a variety of body styles were produced in greater numbers than before.

These later Sentinels continued the qualities that had made the design so successful: a short wheelbase for tight industrial trackwork, rapid steam raising, good fuel economy and straightforward operation. Production continued until 1958, although many locomotives remained in industrial service for decades afterwards.

Today, the Sentinel steam shunter is well represented in preservation, with surviving examples found at heritage railways across Britain, including several still in working order.

The Rapido Trains UK highly detailed OO Gauge Sentinel Steam Shunter 0-4-0 is available in both Pre-War and Post-War body types, and in a variety of colourful liveries. You can look forward to a smooth-running mechanism, NEM 362 coupler pockets, and an E24 decoder socket. This is in addition to a selection of optional details for you to personalise the model.

Due to the limited amount of space that the model's chassis offers, we have prioritised smooth running and have fitted a MoPower stay-alive capacitor to all versions. The Post-War versions have sufficient space, so in addition to the MoPower stay-alive capacitor, they will also feature a factory-installed speaker. These versions will be available in DCC-Ready and DCC Sound-Fitted.
