The Rapido Trains UK OO Gauge rendition of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway D1 0-4-2T recreates William Stroudley’s versatile tank locomotive, originally designed to handle the growing demands of suburban and branch-line passenger services. Built between 1873 and 1887, the D1 combined a compact design with impressive power, acceleration, fuel economy and smooth running, making it a highly adaptable locomotive.

The model will be available in a wide selection of liveries representing different stages and uses of the class. These include various LB&SCR and Southern Railway versions, alongside Whittingham Light Railway examples and ‘What-if’ British Railways Malachite liveries.

Considerable attention has been paid to accurately representing the variations that existed between individual locomotives. Different versions feature appropriate tooling for boilers, tanks, smokeboxes, chimneys, domes, safety valves, whistles, brake blocks, Westinghouse pumps and other components. Certain models are additionally equipped with push-pull apparatus, condensing pipes, air reservoir tanks and other equipment reflecting their later service.

The model incorporates a smooth-running mechanism with all-wheel electrical pickups and powered rear wheels. A MoPower stay-alive capacitor is included to improve reliable running over minor interruptions in electrical contact. Front and rear NEM 362 coupler pockets provide compatibility with standard model railway couplings, while sprung buffers add further detail and operational realism.

Digital features include a Next 18 DCC decoder socket, with DCC-fitted versions benefiting from additional functions. These include a factory-installed speaker for sound operation and a firebox flicker effect incorporating a dynamic fire-draw effect, recreating the changing appearance of the locomotive’s firebox when operating.
