Although John Fowler & Co. of Leeds was best known for its steam traction engines and agricultural machinery, the company also became an important builder of industrial diesel locomotives. After early experiments with internal combustion power, Fowler found greater success in the 1930s with diesel engines. Among its designs was the narrow gauge, four-wheeled Resilient Class, developed for demanding industrial work such as construction projects, quarries and aggregate haulage. In 1936, four were built for the Essex Water Authority to assist with construction of the Abberton Reservoir near Colchester.
Once the reservoir project was complete, three locomotives — Abberton, Layer and Peldon — were sold to the Alpha Cement Company at Cliffe in Kent, where they worked until 1962. After the site's closure, much of its railway equipment was abandoned, but Layer and Peldon were rescued by the Brockham Museum Association. No. 21295 Peldon later moved with the Brockham collection to Amberley Museum, returning to service in 1987 after extensive restoration. The Resilient Class was one of Fowler’s successful industrial diesel designs, with surviving examples also preserved in India and Australia.
The Rapido Trains UK highly detailed 009 Gauge rendition of the Fowler & Co. Resilient Class 4wD will be available in a variety of liveries. All versions are available in both DCC-Ready and DCC-Fitted. They feature a small coreless motor, a MoPower stay-alive, and an E24 DCC decoder socket. So that customisation and servicing your Resilient Class is uncomplicated, the loco's removable body is held in place with 4 easily accessible screws; this also gives you easy access to the model’s E24 DCC decoder socket.
Sourcing parts to customise models can often be challenging, so Rapido has made it as simple as possible by including a detail bag full to the brim with interesting and easy-to-fit parts. These detailed parts include dumb buffers, vacuum brake gear, a grill cover, cab doors, and a selection of different front and rear headlights. For modellers who prefer etched brass plates, the detail bag will also include painted name, build, and bonnet front manufacturer plates appropriate to the relevant version.
