Built by Peckett and Sons at their Atlas Works in 1923, No. 1631 was the second and final member of the standard-gauge 1287 class. The compact industrial locomotive featured 8” × 12” cylinders, measured approximately 15 feet long and weighed just over 12 tons.
Initially supplied to Constable’s (Matlock Quarries) Ltd., the locomotive subsequently worked at Ballochmyle Quarry in Dumfriesshire before moving to Manchester Oxide Co. in 1943. Following the company's takeover by Hardman and Holden Ltd., she was named Marcia in honour of the managing director’s wife. After two decades of industrial service, she moved to the Kent and East Sussex Railway in 1963, where she has enjoyed a long preservation career.
Now jointly owned by Rapido Trains UK and Andy Hardy, Marcia is the inspiration for an exceptionally detailed ready-to-run OO gauge model. The locomotive is currently undergoing a full repaint, with a planned return to service in 2027 in a livery as close to her original Peckett condition as possible.
Despite its diminutive size, the model incorporates extensive detail and tooling variations across the range, accurately reflecting differences between individual versions. These include variations in tanks, boilers, whistles, cab backs, buffers and lubricators. Selected models also feature an interior bunker, vacuum pipes, front steps and other specific details.
Performance features include a coreless motor, smooth-running mechanism and MoPower stay-alive capacitor for improved running reliability. A factory-installed speaker provides sound capability, while an E24 DCC decoder socketsupports digital control. Front and rear NEM 363 coupler pockets are also fitted.
Each model includes etched name and number plates for fitting over the pre-painted plates, alongside optional detailing components to allow further personalisation.
The range will feature liveries drawn from Marcia’s industrial working life and preservation at the Kent and East Sussex Railway, alongside imaginative alternative liveries suited to industrial and light railway layouts. The result is a feature-rich, highly versatile model of one of the smallest industrial steam locomotives produced in OO gauge.
