SER/SE&CR 5-Plank 10 Ton Open Wagons

In the late 19th century, the South Eastern Railway (SER) experienced a significant surge in freight traffic, which quickly outstripped its available rolling stock. Initial attempts to meet demand by hiring wagons proved insufficient, prompting the construction and purchase of around 2,000 additional vehicles. This expansion coincided with the 1899 merger of the SER and the London, Chatham and Dover Railway, forming the South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SECR). As demand remained high during this transition, many wagons originally intended for SER service were instead completed in SECR livery from new.

To help resolve the shortage, approximately 1,250 open wagons were built between 1897 and 1901. These were split between two closely related designs: the Diagram 1340 5-plank open goods wagon and the Diagram 1341 5-plank open coal wagon. Built by several manufacturers as well as Ashford Works, exact production numbers are unclear due to subcontracting. Both types shared the same dimensions, but differed in appearance: D1340 wagons had rounded ends, while D1341 wagons featured distinctive low D-shaped ends and a Williams Pattern sheet rail. Despite its classification, the D1341 type was used for both coal and general goods traffic. Over time, many wagons were modified, including conversions to square-ended versions in 1912.

Following the 1923 grouping, most of these wagons passed to the Southern Railway and were gradually withdrawn, with the final examples disappearing by the late 1940s.
